About the play
The play opens on Ernestine Ashworth’s 17th birthday, where she is agonizing about her place in the universe and her plans for a meaningful life. Soon, it is her 18th birthday, then her 41st, her 70th, her 101st. It’s a play, not just about one woman’s life, but also about what changes, what stays the same, and the things that make a lifetime a life. Every scene takes place on her birthday as she bakes a cake in her kitchen.

And yes, we actually bake a cake onstage!

Celebrate our 50th anniversary with us after the show, where there will be birthday cake and a video retrospective of the Catskill Players 50 years in shows, created by Raphael Sason.

Birthday Candles stars Diana Friedell as Ernestine, and includes Maria Johnson, Rebecca Maeder Chien, Alyssa Christman, Lisa Ruth Mays, Lee Lattimer, Ben Friedell, J Lentner, Charles Sherard, Layla Butterman, and Jackson Hildebrandt. The production is directed by Rosemary Summers. Charlie Reiman is our Stage Manager and assistant director.

Birthday Candles is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals on behalf of Samuel French, Inc. www.concordtheatricals.com

Performance Dates & Location

  • Show Dates: April 17, 18, & 19, 2026
  • Venue: the Wieting Theatre, 197 Main St., Worcester, NY

Available Roles & Descriptions

  • ERIC SHERIDAN – Male 30’s.  A police officer.  A bookish, even keeled guy who finds himself completely out of his element when called upon to express his feelings for a woman, lie to his boss, disguise himself as someone else, and stand up to an armed mobster – while not wearing any pants. Acting requires physical comedy.
  • BILLIE DWYER – Female 20’s/30’s. A police officer, Eric’s partner.  Excitable and entirely unthreatening, she seemingly lacks every skill necessary for police work, but is as eager to succeed as she seems destined to fail.  Acting requires physical comedy.
  • KAREN BROWN – Female 30’s. An accountant, who has always taken pride in her accountant-like and professional demeanor – until this morning, when she finds herself filled with a sexual hunger, unable to keep her clothes on, and unable to keep things under control. Acting requires physical comedy.
  • MAYOR MEEKLY – Male 50’s to 70’s.  The sweet, naive mayor. Affable and gentle.
  • AGENT FRANK – Male 20’s to 30’s.  The head of Security at Town Hall, and frankly, the wrong man for the job.  Although he presents as confident, he is frequently (and especially during moments of crisis) afraid of his own shadow.  Acting requires physical comedy.
  • TODD – Male 20’s to 30’s.  Speaks with a thick Scottish accent.  Acting requires physical comedy.
  • MARY MEEKLY – Female 50’s to 70’s.  The mayor’s wife.  Small in stature and unfailingly sweet, she seems, in every way, the perfect match for her husband.

Also Coming Soon: TALES OF TERROR – November 21

The Catskill Community Players and CANO present TALES of TERROR – An Evening of Stories with Edgar Allan Poe

Welcome, all. Welcome to the dark room, the moonlit night. Welcome to the disembodied voice, the spirit of revenge. Welcome to the tortured mind, the abandoned heart. Welcome to the crumbled visions of a great house, a great family, a great love, a fragile hope. Welcome to the world of Edgar Allan Poe…

Join the Catskill Community Players, if you dare, at the Unitarian Universalist Society, at 7:30 PM on Friday, November 21, for an evening of Poe: seven talented actors will present six of Poe’s short works in a dramatic staged reading. Some of the stories will be familiar to you, and some will not, but they will all surprise and chill you, and leave you wondering just what kind of world you live in. And there may be a chuckle or two available as well.

The Unitarian Universalist Society is at 12 Ford Ave. in Oneonta, NY. There is no charge for admittance, although donations to CCP and the Unitarian Universalist Society will be gratefully accepted.

Join us in the shadows, between dark and light…
